Day 3 – The Online Shopping Scam
When a Bargain Becomes a Burden
The Christmas rush is in full swing. You’re scrolling through social media or searching for that perfect gift, and suddenly, there it is. The exact item you’ve been looking for, at half the price. A must-have toy, designer bag, or the latest gadget. It looks perfect, but there’s one small catch: it’s a scam.
Every festive season, fake online stores appear overnight. They’re cleverly designed to look genuine, complete with glowing reviews, professional logos, and even fake “Trustpilot” badges. You place your order, make payment… and that’s the last you hear. No delivery, no refund, and often, your card details are stolen too.
How the Scam Works
Scammers set up cloned websites or fake social media shops advertising hard-to-get Christmas items. They often use brand names like Apple, LEGO, or Nike to draw people in.
The trick is urgency: “Only two left!” or “Offer ends tonight!” These tactics push you to act fast and think less.
Some buyers receive cheap counterfeits instead of what they ordered, others get nothing at all. In many cases, the sites vanish a few days later, leaving no trace except empty wallets and disappointment.
Warning Signs to Look Out For
- Prices that seem too good to be true, they are.
- Websites without a padlock (https) or with odd domain names (like
shop-appledeals.ukinstead ofapple.com). - Payment options limited to bank transfer or PayPal Friends & Family.
- No physical address, contact number, or returns policy.
How to Stay Safe
- Stop before entering your details, do you trust the seller?
- Check for secure payment options and verified contact information.
- Ask yourself if the deal makes sense, scammers exploit excitement and FOMO.
- Monitor your statements, if you suspect fraud, contact your bank immediately.
Use official brand websites or trusted retailers, and always search for reviews outside of the seller’s own page.
A Christmas Reminder
Everyone loves a festive bargain, but the cheapest deal isn’t always the safest. Take a few moments to Stop, Check, Ask, and Monitor before you buy, and keep your Christmas merry, not miserable.
