Day 7 – The Romance Scam

When Love and Lies Collide

Christmas can be a lonely time for many. While some are surrounded by family and laughter, others look online for connection, friendship, or even love. Sadly, scammers know this, and they use the season’s warmth to their advantage.

The result? Heartbreak, betrayal, and financial loss, all wrapped up in false affection.

How the Scam Works

Romance scams begin innocently enough, a kind message on a dating site, social media, or even a gaming chat. The scammer builds trust over weeks or months, sharing stories, photos, and hopes for the future.

But soon, their tone changes. There’s a problem:

“My flight to see you got cancelled, can you help?”
“I need a bit of money for a gift for my daughter.”
“My account’s frozen and I can’t buy food.”

The excuses are endless, but the aim is the same: to make you feel guilty, urgent, and responsible. Many victims send money repeatedly, believing they’re helping someone they love.

In reality, the person they’ve been speaking to might not even exist.

Red Flags to Look Out For

  • They avoid video calls or face-to-face meetings.
  • Their photos look too perfect, often stolen from elsewhere.
  • They quickly express strong emotions or talk about marriage.
  • They create constant reasons for needing money or gift cards.
  • Their stories don’t always add up — vague about where they live or work.

How to Stay Safe

  1. Stop if someone you’ve never met asks for money.
  2. Check their photos by doing a reverse image search, it may reveal stolen identities.
  3. Ask questions, genuine people will be consistent and transparent.
  4. Monitor your emotions as much as your money, scammers prey on trust, not greed.

If you suspect you’re being targeted, stop contact immediately and report it to Action Fraud or the dating site you’re using.

A Festive Reflection

The holidays can stir emotion and vulnerability, but real love doesn’t ask for cash, crypto, or gift cards.
Trust takes time; scammers rush it.

So this Christmas, protect your heart and your wallet with Stop • Check • Ask • Monitor.
You deserve genuine connection, not deception.
